Got an unsigned letter the other day from a out of state law office telling me I owe them money. Have no idea, so talked with my lawyer and he told me to send a validation letter, which he helped me to do. He added, that since the letter was unsigned, it's probably from a junk debt buyer, who's trying to collect an old debt.

Since there was no one named in this letter to call and it was unsigned, nothing in it is legal.

Should I contact their state bar about this? IS it legal, for them to send an unsigned letter out with their letterhead on it????

Think of it more of a fishing expedition. They are casting about looking for money. They have you spotted and are try to hook you. Now the debt might be legitimate, but unless they provide you with specifics of why you owe them, forget it. You already have your lawyer apprised of the situation.

It could very well be a case of mistaken identity. Do you know how many Micheal Jacksons, Frank Thompsons, and Don Williams there are in this country? If you have a common last name the chances are they are looking for somebody else.

I will speak from experience, that any document I received, had a letter head and contact info on the top of it. Whether it was a debt or a bill, or a lawyer's letter. It is normally how people doing business runs their businesses.

well the state bar is in no position to give you any sort of advice on an issue like yours so i don't understand what kind of a report you would want to submit.
as to the letter itself - who cares? consider it junk mail and throw it away.
