Bubonic, also called "The Plague", "The Black Plague" or "The Black Death" is not as uncommon and 1800's as people often think, and there are cases reported every year, especially in Colorado. It just doesn't often affect people these days, and the outbreaks this year have been in larger numbers.

Bubonic plague is still around. It is commonly carried by fleas on ground squirrels and prairie dogs in New Mexico. Don't play with rodents.

some monkeys in a zoo in the US were found to have died of the Bubonic plague, so all of the primates in the zoo were quarantined to prevent further outbreaks.

immigration i bet, it's actually always been in small varmints in the southwest near the border. but modern anti biotics can treat it if it's seen in people.
