She was so thrilled when she came home and showed me the picture of what she called our baby. Pointing out the arms, legs and head. I told her it is not a baby it is only a fetus and not life . She got really upset and started crying. Was I wrong to do that?

Yes you were wrong. Next time go with her--watch the ultrasound, see your baby moving, it's little heart beating and fetal breathing....and this is about how he/she will look:

You will even be able to tell the sex at this point....if baby cooperates! It may help you if you ask to get a 3-D ultrasound. They're more like what you see here.

Depends on your view of life and religion. Some people feel that once a baby/fetus is conceived it is 'alive or a baby'. Others feel that it isn't a baby until after it comes out. Personally I always felt like it wasn't a baby until my girl had our child and I saw the ultrasound. I think the moment it is conceived it is a baby. But that's for you to decide. Either way you need to fix things with your woman, stress / sadness isn't good for a baby/fetus.

Doi. Don't you know women go under serious hormonal changes during this time. Besides by stating that it's only a fetus you have just declared that the connection you have is not with a baby but something else. Your wife considers the fetus as a baby, and she is right in the fact that it's growing to be a baby. By stating it as just a fetus, your withdrawing from her the emotional connection. Just let it be. AND REMEMBER TO REFER TO THE FETUS AS A BABY FROM NOW ON. IN ANOTHER 5 MORE MONTHS, IT'S GONNA BE COOL! COOL?

I would say that though it is not a baby yet and that you were technically correct about that it was still unkind to talk to her that way and dampen her happiness. She is very emotional about it and this is not the time for putting "technical correctness" above her emotional well being. I consider a fetus to be life in the same way I consider a shrimp to be life but I do not consider it a conscious being with self awareness at the early stage of development. Arms and legs do not constitute not a mind.

A fetus is life, you no brains today , Yes you was wrong. You
are supposed to be supportive. There are cases when the
fetus has been removed from the mother in the early stages
of pregnancy in medical emergency's and lived. It was in the
news this year.

Yeah, bad idea. If it is your kid in there, then it is a child. Only talk fetus vs baby when you are talking abortion- not when your wife is carrying a baby you plan to keep. Plus, it is a bad idea to do anything that could potentially upset your wife- she is probably pretty hormonal and may get upset rather easily.

Parsing words never gets you anywhere . If you really did such a thing, you were wrong .

Let's try more parsing. . . shall we ?

Parsing lesson #1 - A fetus is a younger version of a baby . Babies become kids . Kids are younger versions of adults . But kids aren't adults . Adults are humans . Would someone be wrong to say that kids aren't humans ?

When you come out of your stupor , see if you can correctly answer that.. . . . . . . and then we'll know if you're human or not !!!!!!

It's alive, it's got your genes, it's got a nervous system, it's got eyes, a heart, little arms and legs and all the other stuff. Be careful fella, because from this moment on, your primary title willl be 'the sperm donor' , unless you start demonstrating some fatherly interest and love for the impending event.
