Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. Cookies are "set" by almost every web-site that you visit, on every visit. You can delete all your cookies today and by tommorrow you will have dozens again just be visiting web-sites.

They are not a virus or spyware, but some people consider "tracking" cookies to be an invasion of privacy.

Tracking cookies are mostly "3rd party cookies" from advertising servers. They can track your movements around the web in order to deliver to you customised, targeted advertising.

It all depends on one's level of paranoria.

If you are using Internet Explorer for a browser, you can permanantly block all 3rd party cookies. Go to tools > internet options > privacy > advanced > checkmark "override automatic cookie handling" > third party cookies > tick "block" > ok > ok.

Theyre just small txt files used by websites to track your surfing. In most cases, they are safe if they come from places like amazon or yahoo or the like. They remember who you are so that when you come back your settings are remembered. In bad cases, you visit a site and it sells your surfing habits to unscrupulous companies. Or you visit a site which itsel looks safe, and they promise not to sell your info, but in the fine print it says that they will share with a business partner. but they are "business partners" with a bad company. All it takes is one penny and they become a business partner. And they new one WILL sell your info. Just delete cookies every so often, or after visiting high risk sites. Tools/ internet options/ clear cookies.

Cookies save the cache on your screen. Like when your system prompts "Do you wish for the system to remember your password?", or whenever you open your page, it saves it for faster upload. Enable cookies, but delete them ever once in a while.

always clear your cache and clear your history.
Tracing cookies are not necessarily bad. They can be used to suite your web page based on your internet use but as always some idiots uses them for bad things.
Third party cookies should be set within your browser to either block or allow them this way you can choose if you want their cookies on your computer.
