A subpoena is a document ordered by the Court, directing a person to appear on particular Court matter. This document supersedes an individuals personal reason for choosing not to appear. Failure to appear (FTA) would most likely result in an arrest warrant for the individual.

A subpoena is used to compel the witnesses to attend a trial or other legal proceeding such as a deposition to testify. Sometimes the witnesses might also be forced to produce documents.
In some jurisdictions, the subpoenas are issued by the clerk of the court in the name of the judge presiding over the case in which the witness is to testify. This usually requires an application for the subpoena to be filed with the courts.
Some states allow lawyers to issue subpoenas themselves in their capacity as officers of the court. As an attorney, I've done this many times and it has the same legal effect as if it was issued by a trial judge.
The subpoena will usually be on the letterhead of the court or on a special form available from the court. It will command the witness to attend and specify the date and time for the appearance. Failure to comply with subpoena is usually punishable by contempt fo court. Subpoena's must usually be personally served in order to be enforceable.

When law authorities are investigating a crime and are looking for information from people who are directly or indirectly involved or someone is called to appear in court to testify on someone's behalf. The court issues a subpoena to order you to appear in court at a certain time. It is usually delivered by the sheriff's office.

Why was I served with a subpoena on a case I know nothing about? I witnessed nothing wrong or unlawful and I do not recognize the name of the defendant.

It means you are ordered by the state to make an appearance in court, could be for any number of reasons.
And if you don't show, than the court issues a pickup order, which is basically the equivalent of a warrant.
Whenever a cop runs your name or your license plates, they arrest you and you sit in jail waiting to go to court.
Than after court they either let you go or they don't. Depending on why your there.
You can be subpeona'd as a witness even if you didnt do anything wrong, or for something small like running a toll or an old traffic ticket.
