many things possible; if it's making crazy *** sounds when doing file work (the hard drive), it could be breaking down; time to get a new one, but first back up your fotos, documents, music, etc.
a proper formatted harddrive is the one where you overwrite the old install; not just overlay the windows o.s. if there was any rootkits on the old one, the overlay will not remove it and you are toast.
start a simple routine of disk management: 1) in 'c' drive 'properties', make sure you are compressing contents to save space; dump any 'security suites' factory installed (norton & mcaffee: these are bloatware) and get a free lightweight one (avg, avast, or the killer 'blink')
do a good cleaning (i use 'crapcleaner' & it's A1)
defrag weekly, scan with all current malware items.

spybot just deals with like adwares and spywares. You also need like a virus protector. Umm maybe your computer is just slow because it's old. My advice is to get a removable disc drive. They got 100gb and even larger. Store everything there instead of your computer, so it will run faster. Also increase your ram, that also helps with speed. Clean up your computer. Make sure it's protected. Also then go to Disc Defragmentor. Start.Assessories>System tools. They takes a while so do it overnight. It should make things run faster.

Delete red flags like AOell, limewire, bearshare, weatherbug, mysearch, any smiley any screen saver except for the defaults and commercially availible ones. Then go into msconfig and remove startups. Turn off alll but one toolbar. Uninstall google desktop (it's a HUGE hog) Do NOT have more than one antivirus. Do NOT use AOell security, vr or optimized versions.

Update your firewall and spyware (I prefer using Norton 2007, which will blocks all type of virus and worms.
), and then you should scan your computer in safe mode.

After you get rid of the virus, I recommend you to use firefox browser. It's safer than IE.
It can prevent viruses such as worm, trojan etc. Firefox browser can be downloaded from http://www.mollzia.com

it might be the RAM memory, or the Operating System that you are running on your computer, if you have windows XP, but your computer has pentium II or III, and you RAM memory is 128 MB, the PC will run slowly all the time, if you have the time go to a local technician and have checked your PC.

I hope you can fix your PC ASAP!! CIAO!!

You may want to try running defrag and running disk cleanup. Try running task manager and seeing if there is a process that is taking up memory.
