The salaries for professors in American universities are quite modest by American standards. At most schools you need a PhD to become a permanent, full-time professor. When you are a full professor (after about 10 -12 years) you would make an average of about $75,000. That is more than most people make, but much less than successful businessmen, doctors, lawyers or engineers make.

School teachers in most of the US make less than $50,000 a year, although in some elite, rich school districts some teachers can make quite a bit more.

If you need to get more detailed information about professors, there is an annual survey printed in the Chronicles of Higher Education. It gives very detailed accounts of salaries for different ranks of professors in different subject areas at various types of colleges.
