He wouldn't have been able to stop Desmond from going in and trying to talk to Penny. If he had gotten out, he wouldn't have been able to lock the door so Desmond couldn't get in. Also, if that had happened and the underground station had flooded, leaving both men dead from drowning, who would go warn Jack and everyone else that the boat isn't Penny's? I assume they will eventually find out, but this advance warning could save/prepare the people on the island to deal with what's coming, since it isn't sweet Penny looking for Desmond.

Charlie is a hero!

Thank you!!! someone finally said it! Your right, he could have done that. It didn't have to be airtight. they both could have escaped the same way they came into the hatch. Charlie also could have swam through the hole after he gave Desmond the message. It was large enough for that. Why didn't he try that?. Please don't tell me it was because Desmond said he had to die. Charlie has seen enough of Desmond's visions NEARLY come true to know that his visions aren't always entirely accurate! He had to un-jam the frequency to save them. He did not have to die to do that.

Because Desmond saw it in a premonition , so Charlie believes it is his destiny, and believes that Claire and the baby won't be rescued unless he dies. He thinks if he doesn't die, it will alter the course of events.

Because of Desmond's visions.

If Charlie didn't die then Aaron and Claire would not have survived.

Desmond was trying to open the door and couldn't. Maybe the pressure from the water made it impossible to open. I really hope there is some way that he isn't dead.

I was actually wondering that myself. I think that he remembered that Desmond told him that if he did not turn off the "light" and then drown, that Clare and the baby would not be saved. I guess he thought he HAD to die for them to be rescued.

He had to die for them to be rescued. He died for Claire. Desmond told Charlie he had to die.

He could have only locked it from the inside - if it wasn't airtight shut from the inside, the hatch would have flooded anyway.
