Yup they were flash FORWARDS
I think the casket is noone we've met yet. It is too short for it to be any adult on the island. It is also too short to be Walts casket.

WARNING SPOILERS...
I was also disappointed with the ending last night...I just have a hard time viewing Jack in such a state. As for who was in the coffin...there are several theories out there.
Locke - A lot of people think it's John Locke, but I don't see him as ever leaving the island to begin with. Kate also had such a strong reaction "Why would I go to the funeral?" I don't think her reaction would have been as strong had it been Locke, even though they left on a bad note. Locke is just such a major character to have such a wimpy exit.
Ben - I tend to go with this theory. First of all, the coffin was tiny. Also, Kate's reaction to Jack going to the funeral. Ben may have possibly left the island because of his medical condition. The island just didn't heal him like it did Locke.
Juliet - Some think it was her, but I disagree. First of all, the viewing/funeral had no visitors. Juliet had a sister and she's a young, attractive woman...she would have had at least a few folks at her funeral. Plus, wouldn't she and Jack be together. He wouldn't just find out she died by reading the newspaper. BUT Jack did have a very strong reaction to the death, enough to consider suicide, but who knows?
Other theories tossed around are Michael, Aaron (no way), and Walt. I am amazed that I had such a strong feeling about the ending last night. I was a little depressed that they were off the island and had gone on to live separate lives. Hopefully the writers can carry this thing for 3 more seasons. I have my doubts but ABC seems to have faith in them.

Yeah, that was a big shocker when I realized that the bearded, druggie Jack was not a flashback but AFTER they got off the island. That really threw me.
As for the funeral, I thought they referred to the deceased as "she" so I am thinking it could have been Juliette - that would explain why Jack would be the only one to show and why Kate would be so offended he even wanted her to go!
Still, that was NOT what I was expecting... but I guess they always have to keep you wondering for next season! :)

Yeah I guess Jack became junkie and wants back on the island.
I am curious whose funeral they showed.
Jack said neither friend nor family, so maybe its Ben's?
