They borrowed it. So no charge.
Do you want the friend or not?
You should decide that and either keep the friend and discuss the problem - or - ditch the ex friend!!!
Forget the police!!!

Since your friend has already returned the item it would be hard for you to prove that they took it in the first place. You cannot seek restitution for your stolen item since you still have it. So they would probably not do anything if you pressed charges. You would probably just be wasting your time. Stay away from this person they are not your friend if they stole from you.

That depends on local laws. You can always try, but it is a discretionary matter whether or not the local policy and/or prosecutor would be inclined to honor your request for criminal charges.

If you still call them your friend you should forgive, but never forget. Take the high road, it will have the best outcome for both of you. So don't take it any further, UNLESS, it will somehow produce an even better outcome.

If the item is back in your possession, it is no longer "stolen." A prosecutor won't touch the case, as the defendant could claim you loaned it to him/her. Sorry

No. Having the item back in your possession destroys the case.

If they returned it, no, the police will not prosecute if you have your property in your possession.
