way the writers wrote the ending but assuming it actually happened what did you think of the solution the Russian and American officials came up with-dropping the nuclear bomb on New York City?

The Americans had to agree. Otherwise they would face nuclear war. Obviously New York going up in smoke is better than NY, DC, Seattle, Chicago, Boston etc. going up in smoke. Also, remember that the US way overestimated the quantity of nuclear weapons the Soviets had.

I don't think it would ever happen that way. But it is a chilling way of thinking about how life and death calculations are made during war.

Whenever decisions are make to go to war many people are being condemned to death on both sides including many innocent non-combatants. It seems more chilling to think of specific people being targeted for death rather than the random elimination that occurs during all out war. But is is really all that different?

the scariest thing about the film was that this could really happen--to logically sacrifice a portion of a population in such a situation would be a viable solution.

and even the way a certain country thinks so very little about sacrificing human lives over wrongly suspected WMDs--well, yes, Fail Safe's ending is especially frightening given the political environment in this country. as long as certain interests could be saved, i think anything else would be sacrificed with very little thought or remorse.
