If they had the intelligence passion and true desire to serve why not? How does anyone conclude that working at a grocery store or your local garage make you any less politicly savy than anyone in washington? The problem with this country is that we have allowed lawyers and professional politicians to rewrite and edit the laws so that they almost dont represent the original intent. It it would be great to see an outsider obliterate the nonsense and give the land back to the people. And show that we have been hypnotised by spin doctors for way too long. Then we could see how useless they really are!

Funny you ask. A guy named Joe Schriner is running as "average joe" ( http://www.voteforjoe.com ) Though I don't take him too seriously as a candidate, I may vote for him because he is closer to me on issues than any of the contenders (Ron Paul may come close enough ... still need to check him out more).

There is nothing unusual about an "average joe" getting elected, however. Clinton, Reagan, and Nixon all started out as average people (no rich or famous parents) and worked their way up to the office.

Now that is a good idea. I've often wondered this myself. I've come to the conclusion that it really is all about money. If the person doesn't have the name recognition to garner financial support from large groups of people, they don't stand a chance. But, personally I would vote for someone like that in a heartbeat, if they shared my values.

Do you really think some mechanic or check out chick (no offence intended to either of those careers) would be a suitable presidential candidate? life experience? political experience? i'd say nil for both so how could they contribute or manage running any country let alone the most powerful in the world?

What a stupid question.

H. Ross Perot - albeit he was a billionaire - had good ideas and common sense. Unfortunately, the cowardly Republicans threatened to disrupt his daughter's wedding unless he bowed out of the race. Ironically, he was the only candidate running who practiced true 'family values' and put his family ahead of his political aspirations. -RKO- 05/23/07

I have always felt that an average person running for President would do well. he would be able to connect with the people, and understand their circumstances.
