A child who does stupid things brings sadness and bitterness to his parents.
Why was that such a puzzler?

Good one. My take is that the "foolish son" is a reminder to the father of what he was like at that age and isn't able to explain to him why he's being foolish without exposing his own past (and threatened by losing his respect even if he can), and bitterness to his mother because she's the one who will have to set him straight because dad sure won't and she resents having to do so. Just a guess.

"A foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him."
Offspring being foolish in any way (throwing their lives away, committing crimes, etc) affect their parents badly. Basically, parents aren't happy when their kids aren't what they're supposed to be as good citizens.

A child who does foolish things--things that are truly detrimental to their self worth and that of their loved ones--shames and hurts their parents.
