During a routine drug test, blood was found in my friend's urine. He has been suffering with periodic back pain. What does this mean?

Blood in the urine is never a normal finding in a male.
The presence of blood in the urine simply means that there is bleeding going on somewhere in the urinary tract, and that could be anywhere from the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, or prostate.
I am a little confused about how this was discovered. Urine that is being tested as part of a toxicology screen is not tested for blood, unless other tests are being ordered.
You need to confirm that this test was actually done and to find out exactly what the test results were. Was the blood obvious, or did somebody just see a few red blood cells on a urinalysis, or did a test strip turn positive? If there really is blood in the urine, this will require evaluation.

You shouln't really second guess but its probably kidney stones . Back pain with kidney stones is usually more severe but its definately a symptom . He best get back to the dr for a IVP - where they inject a dye and watch it pass through his kidneys , ureters and out!Make sure he drinks 3 litres water a day

i had the same thing happened to me and i waited too long to get help and ended up having a procedure done to me that would make a lot of men cry. i had a bleeding ulser which they forced a tube down thru my nose down the throat to the stomace while i was woke and i had to have it in there for two days until it sucked out all the blood. dont be scared just get er done o.k. good luck but do get help
