I just recently had a cortisone injection and I'm wondering if one of these injections can cause permanent damage in my shoulder? thanks

Cortisone is the best antiinflamatory agent there is. An injection into a joint or the spine will greatly reduce the inflamation even though it will hurt for a few days. When you get the injection it also has lidocaine (similar to novacaine) in it to lessen the pain from the shot and like novacaine it wears off and the area hurts more than before. I'm sure like anything else you can have damage from it, nothing done to your body is not without risk but this is very low risk. The biggest problem is that this might not work and then your options usually include surgey which also has no gartunees.

Generally those types of injections are part steroid and part anaesthetic. The steroid is a very powerful anti inflammatory and the anaesthetic is there to help ease the pain of the injection until the steroid can kick in. You generally should not be at risk for permanent damage in your shoulder from just one. However, chronic usage of such injections can lead to osteoporosis, etc.

Side affects are rare but possible....

Long-term side effects of corticosteroid injections depend on the dose and frequency of the injections. With higher doses and frequent administration, potential side effects include thinning of the skin, easy bruising, weight gain, puffiness of the face, elevation of blood pressure, cataract formation, thinning of the bones (osteoporosis), and a rare but serious damage to the bones of the large joints (avascular necrosis).
