Neither. I prefer to have all of my mental faculties. What good is the ability to think critically if you cannot remember what you thought. Also, past experience contributes to critical thinking.

Memory may not have much to do with the ability to be a critical thinker. You can easily memorize facts but be unable to string them together to create cohesive reasoning. Idiot savants are this way. They can be highly intelligent and be able to memorize or perform swift mathematical calculations but they cannot "knit" those ideas into everyday life to solve real-life or practical problems.
And as we grow older, our long-term memories are still stored in our brains; however, it may take longer to access them. What is important to learn is good reasoning skills and knowing how to obtain information when it becomes necessary or if we cannot recall specific facts.
A good critical thinker never relies solely on facts he can recall or remember. He will apply sound judgement and reasoning to a situation as well.

Some of the major repression of humans have been completed by people who were deemed good critical thinkers of their time.
It isn't an honour.
Poor memory is a choice. Things that are unimportant to us are never stored for long term memory.

Having had a poor memory all my life, it may be a bit of a slanted perspective, but I'd much sooner keep my critical thinking skills over my memory skills.
Memory skills can be overcome with recording devices, notepads and pda's. It's impossible to have even a computer do your thinking for you.
