yes there are under sea cables going to several continents and lots of satellites
also, there's overhead and underground cables

just imagine this.
100 computer connected to each other using Local Area Network, one computer connected to the other computer on the other floor give the rest 99 computer to be connected to the other computers on the 2nd floor, where one computer called gateway connected to another gateway on the other building, it gives the access for all of the connected computer to communicate with the computer in the other building.

this is why its called world wide web. its a giant web around the globe.
