Overly simplistic answers very rarely paint an accurate picture. One of the first reasons the US is the strongest and richest is that when it was first settled the natural resources were abundant, and were quickly exploited by Europeans migrating here. Also, the vast separation from the older entrenched conflicts that began to come to the fore in the early 1900's and followed through two World Wars had a far less devastating effect on the US economy than on other European states. Furthermore, after WWII the US had natural and economic resources that allowed it to set itself in a dominant position with regards to other countries thus allowing the US to dictate asymmetric relations. As for non European countries, they were systematically stripped of many of their natural resources during the colonial period by various countries leaving them fragile and ineffectively governed. I obviously can't outline in too much detail here other far more specific reasons but if you are really curious check out "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond. All that said, there are definitely some very positive aspects to the US, beautiful and varied landscape, diversity of population and ideas (due to an almost completely immigrant or descended from immigrant population base) and a system of governance which owes it's founding to the French military and French political structures such as the idea of Republic (also though much less directly taken from Greek and Roman political scholarship).

Personally, I think a lot of it had to do with WWII. Europe was basically ripped to shreds by the war whereas we had an ocean to protect us. We lost a base in Hawaii (I am not trying to say the sacrifice was small) but when you compare to a near total loss of infrastructure which is what was faced in Europe. After the war, the two countries that had the most strength left (Russia and US) were the strongest. The US economy basically sunk the Russian economy due to the amount of state control.

The bankers bankrolled 2 world wars... making huge money.. Cheap labor and efficient transportation mobilized the Big Business of USA... Capitalism exploits labor in third world countries for more huge profits... Military Industry of usa extends globally as an empire, installing dictators friendly to American Business interest (though often unfriendly to their own people)
And actually, a lot of people want to live somewhere safe, although often times America had something to do with their country not being safe.

I agree that U.S is all the above, hands down!

But have u ever considered that as a result of all the excess, from the freedom to capitalism-based society, this great country is also responsible for killing our planet. Emission of poionous gases in the atmosphere from all your fancy cars. At least Africa is in a bright light this time, for taking less guilt on global warming. And I regret to say that the 43rd U.S govt is also responsible for countless loss on the human populace (war in Iraq!!)..

And one food for thought to all aspiring immigrants:
you should understand that despite the promising FREEDOM, OPPORTUNITIES OR EXCESS in good ''ol U.S.A, you are not guaranteed everything on a silver platter the moment you land here. Being here to see it all, doesn't mean u'll be able to touch, taste it!The law of "'survival of the fittest"" still applies. I'm sure many U.S citizens are not having it good either and have died trying the American dream..

America and Americans are incredible though! You have acheived great things, yeah..

PEACE!

The idealist in me says freedom. Freedom of speech, press, religion. Opportunity to vote, to chose your own path to success, personal and economic. Which I believe is true.

However, there is also Manifest Destiny, which made the country rich in natural resources, but also lead to near genocide of Native Americans.

Don't get me wrong, I love the USA, proud to be an American, but we need to be honest and there are large black spots in American history, namely, slavery and treatment of Native Americans. And those black spots did lead to economic benefits. Hopefully, we have learned from those horrible policies and live by morality over the bottom line.

Most people know what made our country great. It's a shame George Bush doesn't get it.

Everyone does not want to live in the US. Most immigrants come from poor nations or are unemployed Japanese sushi chefs.

Freedom!
Equal rights and opportunity.
Though not perfect, that hope of freedom, to be what you want and succeed, doesn't exist elsewhere.
If lost, there will be no more hope for mankind.
Other nations refuse to grant such opportunity to their own citizens.
Those who want a one-world government must destroy America first, because they refuse to rise to our standards.
They want to bring us down to their level.

How about a mixture of capitalism(the ability to do as well as you are able to without government interference) and freedom? Plus pure awesomeness.
