Welcome to the Republican Party...
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself a very liberal Democrat and was very much in favor of redistribution of wealth. She was ashamed that her father was a staunch Republican.
Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.
One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes and the addition of more government welfare programs. He responded by asking her how she was doing in school. She answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, with no time to go out and party like other students. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend. Her father listened and then asked, "How "How is your friend Audrey doing?"
She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA She is so popular on campus, college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over.
"Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your 4.0 GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."
The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree! She played while I worked my tail off!"
The father slowly smiled and said gently, "Welcome to the Republican Party"

Welcome to the fold sister. Just a few pointers for the newcomers. Whatever the Dem. party line is, do NOT ever disagree, even a little. Never, ever say a good word about a Republican. When discussing politics with a (shudder) Republican, accuse them of being racists, intolerant, homophobes and in favor of starving little children. Always vote for the Democrat candidate, ever if you do not exactly know what they are for or against. Never ever let facts interfere with you conviction that you are on the side of good, no matter how much it hurts.

Is there really a question in there, or are you just trying to simplify two-sides of a political debate and provoke?
I imagine it's the latter. While your quip is humorous, I would not say that it is accurate. Both parties have been bad about helping their supporters and contributors over their own constitutents.
Between being a Republican or a Democrat - I think I'll choose just being an American.

Sweet and simple, with the emphasis on simple. You have the perfect philosophy for turning the U.S. into Mexico. Mexico with 98% of its wealth held by 2% of its population is the ideal example of where your mentality leads. Black and white ideologies are comforting but usually wrong. I envy you for your ability to simplify such a complex subject and turn it in to merely an entertaining display of ignorance.
I do have to give you credit for a creative solution for the illegal immigrant problem. Given another 20 years of republican theory and philosophy Canada better watch out because Americans will be pouring over there borders looking for a livable wage and government stability. Welcome to the future third world America. I hope you will be happy behind the castle walls.

Cute but pointless. Capitalism has to be controlled almost like a natural force like a river, or it will run amok and destroy. It requires competition to deliver its promise of good quality at low prices, but as demonstrated very clearly by history it degenerates into monopolies--larger and larger companies buying and squeezing out smaller ones, then price fixing, then shoddy quality. Look at the extreme case that gave rise to the reform movement of the late 1800's and early 1900's-- meat packers were grinding up rats and passing it off as meat, people were getting seriously sick and dying. Oil cartels then like now reduced production to drive up prices. There is simply no rational reason at all why an entire country should suffer high prices and bad quality without any choice. Yes its a cute story, but pointless. Study some economics, see how the economy really operates and then...welcome to the Democratic Party!
Do you or do you not want your bank deposits insured? If you do, you are supporting the New Deal Democrats. Do you ever use anything paid for by taxes, like a road, or water from a publicly owned aqueduct?

That was the previous version of the "Republican Party." The one now is giving into to the Libs and trying to pass an Amnesty Bill for the permenant lower class. Now both parties makes me sick. Good point though.

This sounds great on paper - and then you look at reality and you realize that Republicans are bigger crooks because they pertend to be about fair taxing. The truth is the current administrations policies have created situations where corporations directly linked to the leaders - such as Haliburton (Cheney former CEO), Mobile Oil (Condoleeza Rice formerly on board of directors) - are having record profit years directly due to administration policies. That would be the same as the Dean ensuring his favorite students had 4.0 due to educational "perks" while not having to work as hard as the rest of the student population. Welcome to the Republican party.

Here! Here!
This is the corollary to yours
CLEAR EXPLANATION OF TAX CUTS
Sometimes politicians, journalists and others exclaim; "It's just a tax cut for the rich!" and it is just accepted to be fact, without questioning it. But what does that really mean?
Just in case you are not completely clear and/or do not understand this issue, the following should help, if you are a reasonable person.
Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1...
The sixth would pay $3...
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy
with the arrangement, until on day, the owner threw them a curve.
"Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20."Drinks for the ten of you now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each
man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
! The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!"
"That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking somewhere else where the atmosphere is friendlier.

LOL...like almost all Repubs ideas....too simplistic, to black and white, and really out of touch with the reality of the world. You'll never get a Repub to admit it but they also have their 'welfare' industries. The Bush administration has destroyed EPA standards to reward the oil and gas industries, they create a bogus war to reward the military weapons industry, they created billions of dollars a year companies based on no-bid government contracts, changed laws to reward large banking companies, all of these actions were done as pay backs for these industries monetary contributions to the Repubs campaigns. So which is better welfare programs that help the poor and less fortunate or welfare programs that help already wealthy industries futher rape and exploit society?
