If you're talking literally ranks, as in chain of command, then for the X-Men, Prof. X is top, then Scott and 'Ro. But for power...I'm gonna have to go with 'Ro. She can kick some major butt if you get her ticked.... I mean - hello, has anyone besides me seen 'Savage Land, Savage Heart'? Sauron released the controls Ororo had placed on her emotions and let her loose on the Savage Land...it wasn't pretty. Then in one of the novels ('Law of the Jungle'), it was worse - Sauron was always insane, they could count on that, but here he was still plotting and planning, but he was calm, not so crazy. He did something similar to 'Ro; only this time he tricked her. Cold is the enemy of cold-blooded creatures - so 'Ro tried to bring in a localized blizzard to freeze him out, to weaken him, but when she did, he somehow released her powers almost to the point that she couldn't control them. If she hadn't have gotten her powers and emotions back under her tight control, she could have destroyed the Savage Land in minutes. So, like I said, I have to go with the most powerful mutant being Storm, though that's likely an opinion.

And here's something for all you Phoenix lovers out there to chew on - the original Phoenix is NOT a mutant!!!!!! She was an alien life-force that entered Jean's body with her permission to save the lives of her comrades. The Shi'ar nearly worshipped the Phoenix - so how could she be a mutant? Yes, Jean does have incredible power on her own, but the majority of it for a while wasn't her own, but an alien lifeforce's.

What about the 12? Those were powerful mutants, weren't they? Cyclops, Phoenix, Cable, I can't remember the rest. The 12 were hinted at back in the early issues of X-Factor, and fulfilled a few years ago in a storyline involving Apocalypse, Nate Grey (X-Man), and the temporary death of Cyclops. Rather disappointing as it ran. I don't know if Storm was on that list.

Personally, I would have to say (in no real order--comparing different abilities is sometimes like comparing apples & oranges): Professor X, Jean Grey/Phoenix 1, Rachel Summers/Phoenix 2, Magneto, Cable (would be more powerful if he didn't have to keep the TO virus in check), Cyclops, & Storm. Potentials include the late Synch, Jubilee, Rogue, Iceman, & Gambit.
And of course, Leech can take it all away...

Jean Grey as Phoenix is probably the most powerful, however in the classic comics she wasn't really Jean. Then in later comics Jean did become Phoenix. Then Professor Charles Xavier, due to the fact that he could stop a rampaging Phoenix (with the help of Jean's fear for her loved ones), then Magneto because he us both smart and powerful, Wolverine because he has been brought back from an ounce of blood before, and I would have to say Angel or Arch Angel. I would say the Cyclops would be near the bottom because he has never been able to have full control of his powers due to the head trauma he suffered through as a child.

Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch (daughter of Magneto)
She recently eliminated 99% of earth's mutants just by wishing it in "House of M"

Nathan Grey (son of Jean, from the future), X-Man

And I don't recall if Franklin Richards (son of Reed & Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four) is officially a mutant? But his power is off the charts.

Anyway, those are your most powerful mutants in the comics.

Now in the X-men movies, it's entirely different- Jean Grey would be at the top.

Jean Grey is a powerful telepath and telekinetic, but her power level is not the same as Phoenix (the cosmic entity).

I'd say, in no particular order, you have Magneto, Professor Xavier, Namor, Rogue, Scarlet Witch, Franklin Richards, and Rachel Summers.

Technically, Thanos is a Mutant Titanian, and thus he would probably trump everybody else.

If you mean sheer power, then you're referring to "The Twelve" namely:
- Magneto
- Polaris
- Storm
- Sunfire
- Iceman
- Cyclops
- Phoenix (Jean Grey)
- Cable
- Bishop
- Mikhail Rasputin
- Professor X
- Living Monolith

Storm is an Alpha-Level Mutant
Jean Grey is an Omega-level Mutant

and I think Magento is a Delta-level Mutant

Probably Jean and Storm will come on top.

certain super powerful mutants in the comics are referred to as "m class" or "omega level" mutants. prof x, magneto, scarlet witch, vulcan, legion, and a handful of others are on the list. but jean and rachel grey are regarded as the most powerful but they also have the most trouble controling their powers.

erm, i just want to point out that Namor isn't an x-man, and technically xorn is another character (I won't tell you who, but trust me, he's someone else).

when apocalypse gathering the 12 most powerful mutants, these are who he grabbed - the living monolith, professor x, magneto, storm, jean grey, cyclops, iceman, cable, polaris, sunfire, bishop and mikhail rasputin (colossus' brother).

to put those (who are x-men) in order, i'd have to say magneto, polaris, jean grey, professor x, cable, storm, sunfire, iceman, cyclops, and bishop
