That is not big enough for one goldfish either, especially two to three years. You need at least 20-30 gallons as a temporary home for a goldfish, and then upgrade. Normal goldfish grow bigger than a foot. If you want a smaller aquarium of like 29 gallons permanently, get a couple fancy goldfish.

There's a general 'one inch per gallon rule.' For instance for a 5 gallon tank, you could have one 5" fish, or two 2.5" fish, or five 1" fish.

Your tank is big enough. Gold fish do not have a history of living a long time.

am having the same problem too. arrrrghhh ! I just buy some new ones to replace, the stress in wondering "why" is just not worth it, after all !

Put salt in your tank(you can get it at your pet store, also not table salt). Make sure it doesn't have a disease like ick, or fin rot.
