Goldfish are extremely hardy fish. I am sure that if you give it to someone else as a pet it will survive as goldfish (especially the large ones) can take a good bit of grime. However, the recipient should know that he/she should clean the bowl every so often and other things.

Other than giving it away as a quick present, you can give it back to the pet store or try selling it to another person. A large goldfish could net you some cash as many people like to have goldfish in little ponds.

Or you can always make a pond in your yard and keep the goldfish there or you can buy a seperate tank for your tropical fish and still keep your goldies.

You'll have to put them in a separate tank. Goldfish are cold water fish so you don't need to worry about putting a heater in it. The two kinds of fish can't stay in the same tank for very long since the waste from the goldfish will eventually kill the tropical fish.

Please do not release your Goldfish into the wild or let him become dinner for another fish. I agree with Tip & Mittens, offer him on your local Freecycle (find it on the attached link) & I'm sure you'll have plenty of takers. A word of caution-don't just let him go to the first person who replies-they may be after some food for their Piranhas, wait until you have several replies & you will be able to tell by the responses who will give him a loving home.

It's summer. Find a quiet pond and release them. Goldfish are a carp species and if not devoured by another fish, can grow quite large. Or buy a really humongous tropical that requires live bait. and keep two tanks.

Find a friend with piranhas or other such carnivorous fish. They'll be happy to take the fish off your hands.
