When you have a shot that good why even try something else? Steffi dominated on most any surface that she played but especially on grass and clay her backhand slice stayed so low to the ground that there was very little that her opponents could do with their returns but try to get them back into play. Also, the slice also worked as that when it did hit the ground on her opponents side of the court the ball was usually spinning away from her opponent. devastating. No offense to Martina Navratilova... Steffi Graf may be the best tennis player of all time... men or women.

I guess she uses it to allow her to recover in time. This may explain her good positioning and court movement. Also her weapon is her big forehand so maybe she uses the slice backhand to neutralise her opponents hard-hitting while waiting for the right moment to unleash her deadly forehand. Her slice style of play is very unique as the majority of the players hit with topspin. This may disorientate her opponents, producing occasional unforced errors and weak returns which she can capitalise on again with her forehand. The fact that she seldom use her topspin backhand can be a plus as it can be used as an unpredictable shot to produce unexpected winners or passing shots. These are possible reasons but to know the truth only Steffi or her coach (or maybe her hubby Agassi) can answer this :)

Steffi used the backhand slice a lot because not only was she comfortable with it, but it helped her set up her famous lethal forehand. It also troubled her opponents games. Her slice became quite feared like her forehand too, because it was one of the most effective slice shots. Low but hard. It was effective for any surface. Her game, talent and style was deadly to begin with.

Her coatch before ho pot her no1 for 6 years in the world he is second2 degree of my family and he told that she just was playd slice because she couldn't play with booth or one hand backhand, she couldn't control the bowl and she had no power with it. So he was thinking Wat's the best for her?
And he told to Steffi : from now on you just play slice... She did it all the time trying again hitting a lot of bowls but she was gating crazy in the beginning because she didn't know wat to do wit it, she just was putting the bowl in because wit a slice you can't hit winners, so she was getting crazy. But with the time she saw that nobody could handel it so it gets one of her favorite and strongest shots. Because she didn't made no mistakes with it. It is a perfect bowl you can't do anything with it , just put it back again.
