I installed a new MSI P6N SLI Platinum motherboard with Muskin memory and a E6600 Intel CPU. I dropped in the harddrive from my old machine with a working copy of Windows XP Pro, but it won't get past the Windows loading splash screen. It comes up as loading, for about 1 second, and then reboots the computer to the black and white screen where you choose "Last Known Config". Safe Mode doesn't work, LKC doesn't work, nothing will get Windows to load.

I put the drive back into my old machine and it works/boots windows fine.

BIOS sees the CPU and memory, so what is it? I've heard something about Windows not booting if it notices a different CPU/BIOS.... true?

Motherboard and CPU are compatible (says Newegg.com).
No heat issue: BIOS states it to be at 86F for CPU and 99F for mobo.
Using huge aftermarket HSF, plus NB fan, plus two case fans -- all new and working.

The Windows HAL are locked to the previous hardware, unless the new hardware is close enough to the old one, thats what you will get, constant restarting.

You can try a repair install, this is one method I use when changing motherboards for customers, which works most if not all the time. Word of warning, take a image backup first if you havent done this before, so you have something to roll back to.

Your windows is most likely set to your old computer settings and loading the old hardware config. The best option is to backup your needed data, reformat your drive with Windowx and reload your software and data on the drive. Sorry... it's the safest option. Trying to move the drive - it'll never feel right.

Your motherboard, cpu and other things are linked to your OS so no wonder it wont boot. There is no way it will ever boot like that. to get it to boot you need to reinstall windows using the new motherboard.

First you should back up your data

Yes you are right, if windows detects that its environment is different, it might not work properly due to the new board adn bios settings.

I suggest to boot on your old PC, back-up everything important, transfer your HD to ne new CPU, refermat and reinstall windows and then copy back your files.

ok try this, remove the hard drive and see if the system starts ups and then shuts down or stays on, IF it still shuts down remove all extra components , memory, video card, modem ect, then reinstall one at a time. if it still persists to shut down I would believe it to be a heat issue make sure all fans are working especially cpu fan, are you positive that the processor and MB are compatible ?
