I'm having my first exam tomorrow and I'm wondering how on earth he is going to be able to do the part where he sticks a finger in to check things out.
Not trying to be dirty but my boyfriend can normally only get one finger in to the second knuckle(if even that far) and then it starts hurting. And that's when I'm relaxed and well lubricated.
I don't understand how the doctor is going to be able to do it.Do they have some special tricks to help or has anybody else been in this situation?

There is no easy way to deal with this, but the truth is, it will probably hurt you a little bit.
The good news is, these doctors are very fast about checking things out, so it won't hurt for very long.
Try to breathe deeply in and out and relax "down there", it will help things go more smoothly.
You can also let the doctor know that you would prefer he use the smallest exam instruments possible.

The open speculum will be able to allow him to get his fingers inside to take any needed cultures if an infection is suspected. When they do the bimanual exam he will be able to get the two fingers and hand from the one hand inside to feel the organs to make sure that there are no masses or abnormalities to shape and size. The reason is because the vagina is big enough to fit the one hand while using the other hand on top. They try their very best to be gentle but if it starts to hurt you you can ask them to stop the exam. They will also use a special gel to help them work around in there.
I know the exam has probably already occurred now but for the future you can always ask to speak to the dr in plainclothes first before any exam starts. Let them know how nervous this makes you feel and you would like to have a minute to ask questions.
A really good dr will explain what they are doing as they are doing it.
You can also find out more info about the exam and such at: http://forums.obgyn.net/womens-health and also at http://www.WebMD.com

Good for You! It sounds like you are taking the right steps in taking care of yourself especially if you are or are thinking about becoming sexually active. You should be 100% honest w/ your gyno, he will know what you've done and not done. The first exam is a little scary, and you will prob have more than a pap test. They will prob perform a breast exam as well. You will be asked to put your feet in stirrups and scoot your bottom off the edge of the table and he will lube a speculum and enter your vagina. you will feel alot of pressure but not real pain. he will use a stick that looks alot like a Popsicle stick to scrape cells from your cervix. You might spot a little and that's normal. Just remember to take deep relaxing breaths and you'll do fine. If this appt is for birth control make sure you ask all the questions you have about all the different types. Remember too that even if you are still a minor you still have patient doctor confidentiality. Good Luck.

Being relaxed is key to having your first vag exam done without too much discomfort. If it's a good gyn he/she will let you know every little thing they are doing so that you don't get any surprises, there should also be a 'stand-by' in the room (another female clinic staffmember, this person makes sure the doctor doesn't do anything inappropriate if you know what I mean, if there isn't one present you need to request one, it's your right as a patient!!!!). There are also different types of speculums that are used, let the doc know that you've had discomfort in the past and they'll use a smaller one if needed. Having the manual pelvic exam done is not as bad as when you're fooling around with your partner b/c the doc will have gloves on and along with lubricant, it will just slide in easier. JUST RELAX AND DON'T TENSE UP DOWN THERE. Good luck. And oh btw, it never really gets easy even after having it done a dozen times. You'll be fine! (Also, don't be surprised if you have a little bit of spotting after your exam, this is normal).
I'm an OB/GYN nurse so this is our 'field'. You'll be fine!!!

First of all he will ask if you've ever had sex to determine what tool to use. If you're a virgin, and all your boyfriend does is finger you (which I'm assuming you are) they use a smaller speculum than normal. He will not use his fingers. A speculum is a scary looking but painless metal tool that opens the vagina for proper viewing. Its really scary but it doesn't hurt. Its uncomfortable to have some random doctor looking down there, but it'll be over before you know it. The only part that sucks is how cold the speculum is! Brrrrr! Good luck, and you'll be fine. :)

generally if this is your first visit and there is no other reason you are seeing a gyno except to go on the contraceptive pill, he/she wont do an internal (using his/her finger inside you to feel for abnormalities). but if you're sexually active and have been for 2 yrs or more you will probably get a pap smear. Its uncomfortable and can be slightly painful. Your gyno will make sure your body is on the best angle to make it less painful (such as making your hands into fists and putting them underneath your bum to raise your lower half). Some gyno's do tests on the first visit to establish a history, make sure you tell the doctor all you have said here and things should go smoothly.

Well, not to scare you, but the doctor is not going to just stick a finger in to check things out. They use a speculum.... It kind of looks like a duck. They stick that in and then it opens up so they can look up there.
The most important thing you can do is make sure you go to the bathroom before. But no matter what, it really isnt comfortable

Your doctor will be able to work you through it. However, even if there are issues, the worst that can happen is that you may have to come back at a different time. If you are under 21 and not sexually active, he may not even need to do a pelvic or pap, just a general visit

They can also go in another route. I'm a virgin, so they go in anally (sorry not trying to be gross), and my doctor felt a cyst after three sonograms had shown nothing. So if he can't get in or you're not comfortable, he can go in the other way. Don't worry. He's an expert, and I'm sure he's good at this.

Just Relax. You will be in a position that will make it easy for the doctor to feel what she needs to feel. They use a speculum to help open you up. They use lubrication. It will feel a little uncomfortable, but it only lasts a few seconds.
