If you say that "tallest" means the greatest distance above sea level, that would be the mountain you expect, Mt. Everest, at 8,848 meters above sea level.
And if you define "tallest" as the distance between the base and the top of a mountain, you get yet a third tallest mountain, most of which is under the sea: Mauna Kea, in Hawaii. It's 10,204 meters from its base on the sea floor to its tip.
But if you define "tallest" as the farthest distance from the center of the Earth, that would be Mt. Chimborazo, in Equador, at 6,267 meters above sea level. It's farther away from Earth's center, at 6,384,404 meters; Mt. Everest is 6,381,670 meters from the center of the Earth.

If you are measuring from the center of Earth the highest point would be Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador. This is due to the slight bulge in the Earth at the equator. Measuring form sea level it would be Mount Everest.
