it depends on whether you have a virus/spyware infection, how bad it is, and which particular one it is. if you know what the name of the virus or the infected files you can google how to remove them. sometimes the files have to be manually cleaned or removed in order to get the infection off. a lot of times programs leave behind registry keys that reinfect you.
if you're looking for a couple decent programs:
trend micro's pc cillin for virus'
webroot's spysweeper for spyware
these programs have to be purchased. as far as what other people are going to tell you about free programs - ask yourself, if someone just gives you something - how good is it? you get what you pay for. if you want your problem corrected it'll have to be done right. the free scanners miss half of the infections because they don't have a support team sitting there 24 hours a day developing virus definitions.

Download a free antivirus ie, Microsoft Essentials, Avast, AVG, Avira, etc but since you have virus, boot it in safe mode and then install the antivirus and run it to scan for viruses because some viruses will disable the antiviruses,
