Owned was demeaning Internet chat in computers games and chat until someone made a map in Quake and one in another game... i forget which one... and they both had a typo in it on the map or bot-chat where owned was mis-spelled in a phrase something like 'you just got pwned...'; similar to the reason why AYBABTU (All Your Base Are Belong To Us -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AYBABTU) is funny, a typo instead of poor comprehension of English helped make this phrase popular on the net.

Example: If it's Red 8 and 0 Blue on a quake 3 capture the flag (CTF) server then saying blue got pwned is an understatement.

If a similar beating took place on Doom or Duke Nukem then Blue would have simply been 'owned'... because it would have been in an earlier time frame.

owned and pwned are really the same thing.
You see o and p are right next to each other on the keyboard and that is how the term "Pwned" came about some one misspelled owned and voila! Pwned.
Thats pretty much all I can dig up. I hope it helps.
