Cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli are all similar plants. The fruit is just different. If you look at a broccoli top from the grocer, you can see the buds. If the broccoli is left for too long, the top may turn yellow and you can see the open flowers. Cabbage and cauliflower will do the same type of thing if left too long in the garden. After the flowers drop off, the plant will produce seeds. These seeds are then harvested by shaking the top of the stem.

From the base of the cabbage flower. Duh. You've probably never seen a flowering cabbage. Only cabbage in the produce department of the grocery store. Well, if left to fully ripen in the ground, the cabbage will open its leaves all the way and a flower spike will come from the center of the plant. It'll grow to about 2-3 feet high and then sprout several flowers on the spike. when the flowers die out, there is left a seed pod (very tiny) on the stem. This in turn opens and spreads its seeds by wind or the entire pod will fall to the ground and plant the seeds right there.

it forms a stock and then it flowers. This is called bolting.
lettuce does it also. Then at the top of the stock flowers and seeds form.
Many plants now days have been hybridized, even if the modern day cabbage produces seed, I am not sure how viable they are with all the experiments that have been preformed on the seeds/seedlings
