check the phone book for landlord tenant rights or contact the department of housing in your area. also get an attorney they can give legal advice regarding evictions. your friend can't just be evicted without notice. it is against the law.

Find out which agency oversees tenant/landlord relationships in your state. Many states call it the Department of Real Estate, or the same agency that licenses real estate agents.

If your friend has a lease, it is illegal for the landlord to kick him out without eviction proceedings. He can file a lawsuit against the landlord if he wants to pursue it. Even month to month, 30 days notice is usually required.

In most cities, there is a bureau which manages the ordinances regarding rental properties. If your friend lives in a major city, he/she should explore this alternative. If not in a major city, there is less recourse.

The best thing to do is to talk to a realestate lawyer. They will have a free consiltation with your friend and tell him if he has a case and how to procede forward.
