what is it in salt that changes water's boiling point when they are mixed? i'm doing a science project, and i'm trying to write a good hypothesis.

It has nothing to do with the salt, rather it is the properties of the solvent that are key. This is called "Colligative Properties"

Any particle at all will have the same effect. When added to a solvent, such as water, the particles interfere with the molecules wanting to leave the liquid, so the boiling point is raised (and freezing point lowered). It doesn't matter what the particles are, only how many particles are involved.
