Don't hold your nose. Instead blow out of your nose a little at a time. Keep practicing until you can get to the bottom of the pool.

Practice, practice practice! Try to breathe out gently and at an even keel, don't BLOW hard when you breathe out. Another easy mehtod to getting the feel for it is to hum. With your head above water, start humming a note. Sink under the water and continue humming. The air escapse our nose when we humming so humming underwater is basically breathing slowly out your nose. Just relax, practice and don't let it get to you. You'll be fine ( =
Also, the person who said you won't think about it in a rescue situation anyways is right on. Your adrenaline will be so high you won't even know what happened until your debriefing afterward!
Good luck!!!

If you have to save somebody, you won't even be thinking about holding your nose. You won't even know how you got to them after it's all over or that you could swim so fast. But, it sounds like you need to breathe out slower. That's the only thing I can really think of for you. It sounds like you get so desperate to not be holding your nose that you breathe all your air too fast. Good Luck!

Your breathing out to fast....Plust the more and harder you swim under water the more oxgen you use up, the less air you have in your lungs to breath out. So, if your in a pool go all the way down to the bottom and swim. If you get alittle water in you nose just try to swallow it and keep stroking. Good luck and hope this helps.

I'm guessing the only reason that you're holding your nose is because water is getting up there. Blowing bubbles out your nose slowly (keeping a positive air pressure in your nostrils) should fix the problem. If there is air coming out water can't go in. With running out of air too fast issue....you're probably nervous and are blowing the air out way to fast. SLOW DOWN! breathing out underwater should feel like you are breathing out on land....slow and steady. If you are nervous, it is probably your startle reflex that is making you suck water back in your nose....you need to retrain your brain to breath out when you get freaked (slowly) and then come up for air before you totally run out of it (you should still be blowing out of your nose on the way up and back out of the water until you are clear of the water...then you open your mouth and breath in...this exercise is called bobbing). The people that can hold their breath longer are usually letting little tiny air bubbles out of their nose very very slowly to maintain the positive air pressure in their snazola. I once had a beginning swim lesson that had a similar problem....their nose was turned up more (piggy-style) and it was harder to keep the water out of her nose...even when she was blowing out....she finally accomplished the task by using her bottom lip to help control the air bubbles coming out (by pushing her bottom lip up to partially cover her nose). Hope this helps and good luck with life guarding

You are going to have to spend time training your body to hold the air longer. It is mostly a matter of practicing. It helps to remember to take slow, deep breaths and just keep working on it even when you are out of the water.

This is called Sleep Anea and it can be somewhat serious. The important thing is catching it early and getting a test done at a sleep center. They can give you an apparatus you can wear while you sleep which keeps your airways open. When you stop breathing several times an hour you shorten your life span and open yourself up to TONS of problems. Are you by chance overweight? Many overweight people suffer from sleep apnea. I stopped snoring after I lost weight. But please, get this looked at. Even though no one around you notices, you could be really hurting yourself and shortening your life span.
