Do you think Reality Shows would have appealed to a 1950's audience? Why or why not? What types of shows were popular then, and what does that tell us about people of that time?
What does reality television's current popularity reveal about today's society?

KJM480 - you frighten me. The 1950's was the GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION. Ever hear of Uncle Milte? Jack Benny? Sid Caesar? George Burns & Gracie Allen? Alfred Hitchcock? The Twilight Zone? I Love Lucy?

There were game and panel shows, where clever celebrities interacted and there was a live audience. These shows were fun. In the 1950s, not everyone thought they were entitled to their moment of fame. There was more humility and modesty in people.
Today's society knows no shame, modesty or sense of proportion, the desperate need to be validated causes them to do horribly shameful things in front of millions of viewers and not even realize they are shaming themselves.

Good question. I think TV was so novel to them, they just wanted to be able to get their news, etc. I don't think TV was viewed as true "entertainment" until the 60s.
Reality TV is fun today since we get to be voyeours into other's lives and think about what WE would do if we were in a similar situation. Networks love them since they are so cheap to make.

Yes I think the 1950's audience would have enjoyed todays reality shows, there were several shows back then that were similar to our shows that we have now.

Yes, I think they would, especially something like the "Amazing Race." We were pretty straight laced so we would easily be offended by cursing and nudity and sex, so we wouldn't care for the trash reality shows like some on VHS. No matter the times, we are all voyeurs.

Yeah, they certainly would, but you'd have to change the names to fit the times, like, survivor in germany. Punchline: your a jew in Germany 1952, jews and communists test their skills, did the war really end?

I think they would. I mean, if people would have put them out then, they would have liked them. Like when they put them out now, people liked them, so it would be the same, I think.
