A salt is formed in the reaction of an acid and a base.

If both are "strong", e.g.. HCl and NaOH, the salt will be neutral.

If the acid is strong and the base is weak, HCl and NH3, then the salt will be acidic. If the base is strong and the acid weak, e.g. NaOH and Acetic Acid, then the salt will be alkaline
