No matter what, the best film ever made is FIGHT CLUB. Not only is the writing and subject matter excellent and mindblowing, FIGHT CLUB simply has nothing wrong with it. No plot holes, bad acting, no mistakes WHATSOEVER, and keeps surprising me everytime I watch it (there are subliminal messages throughout the film, and quick important diolauge easy to miss). Three things that make a good movie?
-Writing
-Directing
-Acting

First, I have to say that movies are a subjective thing so they will vary from person to person depending on taste.
Personally for my the top of the heap has to be:
AMERICAN BEAUTY
1.) Twisted and beautiful all at the same time
2.) Some of the best quotes ever
"Denial is a beautiful thing" American Beauty
3.) Deals with people waking up from their comatose existence to realize that they have lives to live. That maybe being happy should figure into the picture somewhere. Rather than worrying about monetary gain and how you might look on the outside; and that the people you care for really are the only things that matters in the big scheme of things.
4.) Kevin Spacey need I say anymore
OK so that is four, I would definitely say that this movie doesn't' appeal to all peoples tastes. It is a bit raw and twisted but has a sense of humor through out. I think that if more people had a sense of humor about even death we would live in a much more pleasant world.
Blessed Be!

The Shawshank Redemption. Written by Stephen King.
Thing one. Revenge
Thing two. Homosexual Rape
Thing three. Murder
Thing four. Suicide
Thing five. Irony
Thing six. Suspense
I'm sorry, got carried away there. I,m not a big fan of rape or homosexuality but, or should I say,..... however....... it does play a big part in the film. These things are listed just to get you to watch the film. The cast, direction, filming style and use of narration make the story come alive and in dong so generate one of the best films of all time.

I can't really pick a favorite, but I would say either Pirates of the Caribbean, Back to the Future, or Indiana Jones.
I agree with the first answer: action, adventure and comedy. The 3 elements should be all equally balanced to create a film that flows smoothly and keeps the audience entertained.

Donnie Darko
1) Its one of those movies that every time you watch it you catch something new that you overlooked before. I love that in a movie
2) It makes you think. you cant watch that movie once and be like "yea i understand everything that i just say" you think so much during the movie.
3) Even though its about a stupid concept (time travel) they made the movie so you dont even really concentrate on the fact that its about time travel.
If you havnt seen this movie i definately recommend it. It seriously might make you think differently about a lot of things.

There are so many great movies, it's hard for me to pick the "best". But what makes a great movie is-
1. Compelling and intriguing plot
2. Great acting
3. Great directing
Without all three of those, the movie could never be considered "great".

The Lord of the Rings
-Great dialouge that progresses the story at a quick rate, but not too quick, so you will be watching out of suspense.
-Great Drama and a mix off genres. LOTR has action, humor and moving drama.
-Scenes. The scenes must be placed in pitch-perfect order.
