They are to blame for the taxes that raise the cost to you and I four times more that the actual cost. They are also to blame for no new refineries being built in thirty one years and over 2/3 of the existing ones being closed during the same time period.

Actually, from what I understood, this was payback for democratic sweeps in congress and the senate, and if the prices are ramped up by the time elections roll around people will be thinking the Republicans could help them get re-elected in '08. The problem is that while that might or might not happen, it's not about democrats or republicans, it's about Chinese and Indians.
I think there are some hard realities that the Red Staters & SUV folks are going to have to start wrapping their heads around.
1. China and India now use nearly twice as much oil as we do, (this is up almost 40% in just 4 years) - so the price of gas is REALLY market driven and not the result of creative taxation on the part of your local politicians.
http://www.the-end-of-oil.com/
2. Despite whatever our friends in Saudi Arabia say, we are REALLY running out of the stuff, in the 60's we found a billion barrel sized oil-field every 6 months, we found the first one in 10 years off the coast of Louisiana (it's 4 and 1/2 miles down, which is almost 10 times as far down as older wells,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil
3. Most countries pay about 2 times what we do, since their governments were compelled by the real rising cost of oil, to basically compell their citizens to use less oil.

Besides, honestly speaking whom do you think an oil producing Sheik or Emir or "President for Life" would prefer to deal with? What the American people are going to have to warm up to is that the Arabian world, and mostly our good friends in Saudi Arabia, Iran , Russia and elsewhere, are or will be in a position where the US market represents about 30% of all the oil consumed, and China and India aren't nearly as "troublesome" as customers, they don't saber-rattle , they pay whatever the market bears, they don't send political operatives to pressure the Emirs or Oil Ministers, and they try to educate their citizens on the real cost of oil and it's relationship to their national well being.
And neither one of them has made much of any sort of military demands or really interferes in the internal affairs of the producer states at all with CIA operatives and whatnot, (they do but it's all "soft" power/(monetary bribes etc) at this point), no/very little military intervention.
We certainly don't see China or India telling folks what to do or "regime changing" neighboring countries or whatever so they are just much better customers and so are getting better and better deals than we do.
So SUV drivers should smile when they pay 200$ to fill up or whatever it takes, and we will all learn that arrogance and stupidity are in fact still considered minor sins most everywhere except in the US.

That would be a really good question if the government actually had control over prices. It's called supply and demand. Not enough refining capacity means not enough supply. More demand than ever means higher prices. THe best part is, once the summer driving season is over, and demand goes down, so will prices. THen the American public will forget all about it like they have for the past few years. Only next summer, when prices go even higher, will we get all up-in-arms again. personally, I have decided to drive no more than 65. Increased my mileage by 10% effectively dropping the price of gas to me by .30 or so. Maybe if everyone did that demand would go down enough for prices to drop. But if that happened, then everyone would just speed up again. We have such short attention spans.

Yes they were blaming Bush for the high prices and I do recall some of them say that they would get it under control. Doesn't bother me much, I live 10 miles from work and besides I still don't find it that expensive.

Oh, you are so silly! Everyone knows that GW has all of the oil connections! He and Cheney are making money hand over fist while they are in office.
Now, if you were talking about canned goods, I might believe you. But oil? Yeah, it couldn't be because of the TEXAN in the oval office, could it?
