I am in 5th grade and i'm considered "gifted".But I don't want to be in gifted classes next year, it's too much stress.
I've gotten a's and b's all my life and never studied (it may not seem true but it is)
I just pay attention, that's all.
But my mom isn't convinced, i've told her all this but she still thinks i should be in gifted classes.

Any ideas how to convince her?

seriously - be in them. i didn't want to either when i was younger, but you WILL look back on it and be stoked. we used to have this thing called "GATE", some of the stuff they'd have you do was actually pretty cool and/or fun.

look at at it this way - those classes may be "stressful" now, but it'll make high school that much more of a 'breeze', which means more time for parties and chicks. (i know it sounds corny, but it's true!). ...and when you're old and married, you can tell your hot supermodel wife how 'they made you be in these gifted classes' when you were younger right after you're done telling here about some of the crazy parties you went to in high school and how you and your buddies raised...erm..."heck" (since because of those earlier classes, you had the time to do so!)

Are you in gifted classes now or do you have friends who tell you it is too stressful or are you just afraid it will be?
Do you know the teacher? Try not to take friend's suggestions and try for yourself. If you do know that it is too stressful then tell your mother you don't want to develop psychosomatic illnesses this young. Stress is very unhealthy. My 8th grade daughter stayed in but her best friend is a real worry wart and got so stressed out that she was always sick 5,6, and 7th grade. She chose not to stay in for 8th grade and now that she got her H.S schedule she is signed up for all the same honors classes as my daughter for next year. So it didn't even matter, did it! She's ready now to take on more challenging work but all this year she played on a volleyball team and sort of caught up on elementary things she had missed when she was studying her eyes out!
Once gifted, always gifted so it is not like you will loose it! Find your "passion:" something you love love love and you will be successful in whatever that is!

Gifted kids learn faster than so-called "normal" kids, that's all. The work isn't harder, they just spend less time on it because the kids all learn so fast. That means they have more time for "enrichment". For example, it can mean studying an interesting subject in depth, cool science activities, and arts experiences.
My son was in a public school gifted program and got a private school education-- FOR FREE! By the time he finished 5th grade, he knew how to plan a semester by making timelines, setting goals, and how to plan for tests, essays and reports. He kicked butt in HS, and did really well in college.
Jump on it-- you won't be sorry.

Dear mom,
Why won't you let me continue to be lazy! I'm so use to just getting A's and B's by showing up to class, that I'm not sure I can exert myself to do a thing called "studying". I don't want the universe to think that I am "motivated" or "care" about school. I just want to continue to do the least amount that I can possibly do. Sound Ridiculous? The fact is, there is a ton of research on the web that suggest that true "gifted" individuals tend to be self-"motivated" learners. My guess is that you're an above average student in an average school system.

You are afraid of not making a's and b's. But if you dont push yourself some start now. If you dont what will happen when you need to push yourself later in life. you back out now it becomes easy to not do in life. Everyone is afraid. The ones that over come there fiars is the ones that become someing special in there lives. Life is not easy and you learn that now.

Just try it out, if its too much stress half way thru the year, talk to your school counselor and express how you feel, then they can talk to your mom and maybe move you back to your regular classes. You might find that you like the classes after all, you never know unless you try. =)

If you really don't want to then adamantly tell your mom you don't want to.

But you'll probably look back on it with regret when you see a bunch of kids Senior year being handled tons of money through scholarships to college while you'll have to get a student loan.
