down because when your going up it is less noticable. and you can just catch yourself and keep walking going down you go all the wqay down and have no way to redeem yourself

I wouldn't be too embarrassed falling up cause you can catch yourself. It's pretty easy to catch your foot on a stair and fall up. And if I fell down just a little I wouldn't sweat it. But if I fell down like 3 flights I'd just be thinking about going to the hospital, not being embarrassed.

It just so happens that I did both in the same day this week. The only reason I say it's more embarrassing to fall up the stairs is because someone was behind me when I did it and they yelled "omg are you alright?" real loud!

Probably down, because it's hard to cover up. Tripping up the stairs, you can usually get back on balance.
But then again, I've been known to...but that's another story...

up the stairs its very easy to fall down the stairs but only a true clutz can fall up them
