In the last month, twice I've woken up in the middle of the night choking like crazy, then have to keep coughing to clear up my windpipe and get my breath back. Is this something to worry about or does it happen every now and then? Oh and what should I do if this happens again in the night because I sleep alone and there will be no one to help me get my breath back etc.

Tell your doctor about this and see if you can do a sleep study. They can monitor you while you sleep and see exactly what's going on.

I sometimes have the same problem. Here are some tips: 1. don't eat anything within 2 hours of bedtime. 2. Try taking an acid reducer like prevacid before bed if you can't break the eating near to bedtime habit.
3. Don't take any type of muscle relaxants near bedtime. 4. See if you can train yourself to sleep on your side. If this problem continues to get more frequent, you may need to learn to sleep with your head a few inches higher than the rest of your body by means of a foam cushion designed for that purpose. I know what you are going through....it's damn scary to wake up like that....unable to breathe and coughing up acid. Next time, try not to panic. If you are awake, you will survive, even thought it may not seem so at the time. It's the passed out stone cold drinkers/drug users who die from inhaling vomit.

You snore you say?
Have allergies???
Do you grind your teeth too?

You should try taking an antihistamine and a decongestant 30 minutes before bed and see if it helps.

If it keeps happening, you might have sleep apnea, so you should see a doctor.

Elevate you pillow a bit and sleep on your left side. That might help also.

it usually happens when you sleep on your back, if you are worried try to sleep on your side instead.
Snoring does have something to do with it, because you cant breath well, you inhale sronger and end up chocking. My husband suffers the same every now and then and thats what his doctor told him.
Good Luck
