Laptops are helpful, but it depends on your University and how the individual professor feels about having laptops used in the classroom. I know some professors don't like it and prefer you write your notes down...some don't even allow recorders.
I suggest you ask the person who gives you a tour of your college, he or she will know if it is common to have them on campus or if it is a waste of money.
They are nice to have if you don't want to work in your room and don't have a computer or if you like to work in the library and can't get on a computer. But you will need to be careful, laptops are stolen all the time.
Good luck

Congrats on going 2 college !!
well.. from my experience u dont really need one bc there are billions of computers everywhere on my campus. so i would recommend u research your school 2 see if they have computers available and at what times. If they only have them open from 8:00am to 10:00pm then maybe you should get a laptop, bc if u r like me, i leave all of my research and papers for the last minute ha ha.
I found it really useful to have one though because i like typing up my notes from the lectures instead of having 2 write them all out. Its faster, and neater. Then when midterms and finals time comes around all u have 2 do is to print out your notes and your set. They will all be in one place, instead of trying 2 look everywhere for papers and notebooks and possibly loose some.
I do recommend that if u choose to buy one, dont buy a very big or heavy laptop because it can get tedious trying 2 carry it around campus. Go with a light and decent sized computer so that it is easier to carry around and u wont hurt yourself .
Good luck in college!! have lotz of fun!!

A laptop would be useful, though not necessary. At the minimum, however, you will NEED a computer and printer of some sort. Regardless of your major, you'll need to be writing papers (most professors require them to be typed), and as a music major, you may find some of the computer-based composing programs to be helpful.

Laptops are the thing these days. Get a good one and ask around your older college friends for the specs. or read a magazine about which one to buy.
There are other ways to find out the best fit for you - go to a store on a non-busy time (Tuesday mornings are good) and get a friendly salesman to help you, or lady.
