YES!! Not only can they scratch them, but cats love warmth. When your baby is on the floor or sleeping in its bassinett, a cat can sit on its face because its warm. I wouldn't risk it.

The scoop on cats...no, they aren't dangerous to the baby unless there are issues that you have already encountered. Cats will usually leave a baby alone. Cats will not sit on a baby or on a baby's face unless they are particularly cuddly and like to sleep on your head etc in the night, something you would already know about. To be safe, just shut the cats out of a room where the baby is sleeping alone, and keep an eye on the baby if he/she is in a bassinet nearby. Cats are not usually attracted to the smell of milk on the baby's breath and will not intentionally sit on the baby's face. Cats don't scratch babies until the baby gets old enough to grab and harass the cat (around 5-6 months). Then, the kid deserves it (although I don't let my cats fight back, my kids do deserve it sometimes).
If your cats are aggressive with you, or if they have problems (that you already know about) then those need to be considered, but otherwise, cats are not a danger to babies.

When my 3 year old was born he had RDS and the doc suggested getting rid of the cat due to the cat hair. Since have gone on and gotten a new cat. Just had a baby and this cat is CRAZY!!! He is actually leaving tomorrow because he hisses at the baby everytime he moves. So, I would have to say yes!!

what do you mean by semi wild?? I've never had a problem with cats and babies. In fact I had a siamese that slept in the crib with a new born. God help any one that tried to wake up that child. But she was a family pet... if that's truly possible for a siamese.

Don't give your cat away, cats in residance before the baby is born are fine. But you may want to close the door to the baby's bedroom when it is sleeping.
