Various cities were wanting to be known as "apples" which was a term used by con artists to describe the process of separating tourists from their dollars. Camden New Jersey, Detroit Michigan and St. Louis Missouri all wanted to be known as the best place for a tourist to come, have a good time, get robbed and possibly contract a venereal disease.
Fortunately the strength of the organized crime families in New York City was such that they dissuaded the other cities through a combination of "sweetheart" deals and outright corruption and threats to retain the title "Big Apple."
It's just amazing where my mind goes when I give it free reign to make stuff up..

It used to be called the "Big Colostomy Bag" but that was a copy-write infringement on Jacksonville.

I'm not sure but if you notice in the nickels theirs a tree so i guess the had to put that tree their for a reason...cause what nickel wouldn't have an apple?
i dunno really maybe people like the bigs apple they sell their o.0
