If I remember correctly, they didn't attack the wrong hill, it was part of the plan to send forces up Kettle Hill and others up San Juan Hill. Once the Rough Riders took Kettle Hill, Roosevelt noticed that the really intense fighting was on San Juan, so he yelled to his men "FOLLOW ME, MEN!" they charged San Juan Hill and aided in the taking of it...the entire battle lasted less then an hour.
