There is probably something to be said for maintaining a balanced life. However, undergraduates today take it to an extreme. They don't understand that college is a job just like any other. Education requires effort, persistence, and discipline. Unfortunately, many blow off anything that is remotely challenging and think that they deserve to complete their educations successfully because mommy and daddy paid their tuition.
This isn't to say all undergrads live this lifestyle or that none of them work hard, but an increasing proportion seem to be joining the ranks.

What's really important is having good time management. If you are business-like about doing your work, then there is plenty of time for having an active social life.
One of the other answers makes fun of the University of Chicago (unofficial motto: "Where fun comes to die!") because they are supposedly famous for being amazing academic grinds who only study and never do anything else. But actually, if you visit UCHI you will see a bunch of very focused kids who do a lot of fun stuff but who never let social life get ahead of academics.
It all depends what you want.... the UChi kids have fun in school but because they work so hard, they have great lives after they graduate - one year they checked the grads who had completed their degrees 20 years earlier - one-half of the entire class were millionaires.
So, emulate them --- have a good social life, but keep everything under control and work really hard. You can have fun and get a great education, too.
Good luck.

i agree but there should be a balance. I know many people who failed out of college because they partied and hung out with friends more than they studied. I think college is about balance between academics and having a social life. Also, a social life is important especially when choosing classes and getting classes with friends. Furthermore, more friends = more connections after you graduate.

I agree. When you are social, you can feel good about yourself. When you sort of "hang back"in the crowd, you might have alot more worries or troubles on your mind and it is harder to concentrate on your classwork.
