Jimmy Carter was a disaster as President. His Adminsitration saw the high-water mark of the Soviet empire--with their aggressive military adventures in Afghanistan, Angola, Nicaragua, etc.--and the low point of American power. He mishandled the crisis in Iran, leading to the 444-day-long hostage crisis that even today makes it impossible for the US and Iran to have normal relations. Price inflation hit double-digits, unemployment was twice as high as today, interest rates hit 20 percent, and the stock market was stuck in the pits. When you combine that pitiful record with Carter's fondness for sermonizing and preaching (which he aimed at Clinton as well as W.), then it's easy to understand the dislike engendered by that man. Nixon at least had the decency to keep a low profile after he left Washington.

It's mostly people who remember the late 70's that have some lingering dislike of Former President Carter. The 70's were arguably the nadir of American history. Though the economic maliase of the time was not nearly so devestating as the great depression, it was still remarkably demoralizing, for instance. There was the 2nd energy crisis at that time, too, and the Iran hostage crisis in '79.

On top of that, Carter was a political outsider - he captured the nomination unexpectedly and didn't really have the full support of his own party leadership. Thus, criticism was heaped upon him from both sides of the aisle, leading to a badly tarnished public image while in office.

Once out of office, and no longer the target of hatchetmen from both parties, he was actualy able to make some progress in rehabilitating his image and taking up the 'elder statesman' role, something like Nixon did.

Carter was president at a time when the U.S was declining on the world scene and suffering economic woes at home. While Carter influenced some of these issues, he is not principally to blame for them. Nevertheless, the problems existed during his presidency and that is what people remember.

Inflation ran in the double digits per year during some of Carter's presidency. (money becoming worth less over time but wages don't catch up as fast). This causes sticker shock when you go to the store. The second problem was that interest rates, (the price of credit or loan) was also very high. So people felt strapped because their money didn't go as far, and it cost too much to borrow more. On the world scene, the Soviet Union (which was the bitter communist enemy of the U.S.) invaded Afghanistan. Some say largely because it knew the U.S. wouldn't do anything about it. In Iran, students stormed our embassy there and took all of the Americans hostage. The situtation last from 1979 until the end of Carter's presidency. Carter is respected today as a diplomat and mediator. His greatest success was helping Israel and Eqygpt (an Arab nation) sign a peace accord.

Carter is by many accounts one of our smartest presidents. He was a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy in addition to being a peanut farmer. His economic policies and much of his dealings with the Soviets did not produce desired results. He looked folksy but was professorial and brainy in his speech. (wearing cardigan sweater on tv, and speaking in a southern drawal while using big words nobody knew) In contrast, his successor Ronald Reagan talked in a way that people understood and looked presidential while doing it.

Carter is from Georgia which is home to many peanut farms.

They insult Jimmy Carter trying to get focus off of what they have in the White House at the moment. You tell me one country that has a President that can't read, write, ride a bike or can't tie his shoes. That is the craziest thing I have ever heard, you can go to schools for people with special needs and you want find one that is that backward and ignorant. Bush is a complete retarded person in the worst way, I know a girl that is a mongoloid and she can tie her shoes, color in a color book and ride a bike. This is a disgrace to America , just stop and think the main things in School in reading, Writing and Arithmetic but he is so crazy that he can't do any of these things. Aren't you ashamed that everyone in the other countries call him Old Cowboy with his six shooter srapped to his side. They all look on America and wonder if any of us has any sense. When you choose a leader he is suppose to be a smart man that can lead people, you don't want man that has a mans body with retarded childs mind
What is wrong with you people just stop and think he has 2 digit IQ the lowest on any sitting President. Just because you are Republicans I know you still have shame, I'm embrassed to death that we present a man to go to all these overseas places and all the leaders around the table eating and he is talking to Blair while chewing his food with a mouthful and reaches over and grabs another roll and keeps talking and chewing at the same time. My children knew better than to talk with their mouths full at 2 years old. It is disgrace to America but yet you'll sit there and brag on him. I just can't understand why you would want a complete man with not a bit of common sense in your White House. It is beyond me. Get real, wake up and smell the coffee ,before there is no coffee left to smell, my lord. get real.

i think of he should be quiet - era. If he tries to be yet another Jimmy Carter, he would be purely as treasonous. Carter has additionally spent a suited quantity of time enticing in questionable placed up-administration activities, alongside with a million) befriending North Korea throughout the time of the Clinton administration and helping it conceal its nuclear weapons application and 2) immediately contacting Soviet officers for the duration of Reagan's term to undermine his anti-communist policies

A public perception that the Carter Administration had been ineffectual in addressing the Iranian hostage crisis may have contributed to his defeat. Although the Carter team had successfully negotiated with the hostage takers for release of the hostages, an agreement trusting the hostage takers to abide by their word was not signed until January 19, 1981, after the election of Ronald Reagan. The hostages had been held captive for 444 days, and their release happened just minutes after Carter left office. However, Reagan asked Carter to go to Germany to greet the hostages.

Carter's administration had many challenges ... including an energy crisis with long gas lines, high inflation, and the Iran hostage situation. I would say most of these things weren't his fault, but they are what he is remembered for.

In my opinion, he is one of the most intelligent Presidents we've ever had, and he is certainly one of the most accomplished ex-Presidents.

Because some people are stupid. I think highly of him. It's sad that people dislike peacemakers. What do they think of Bush now? I bet they would love to have a peacemaker now. They don't know what they mant. He's a good christian. Not one who claims to be one and then go around and send people to their deaths. Go Jimmy Carter!

His HOstage Mistake is beyond me... never researched it and before my time, but i don't see how that in any way qualifies him as the worst president in US history, or anywhere near Bush's level. I think highly of him, he is a peacemaker, and his work today out of office is doing many great things.
