I'm interested in studying in both of these fields. I know that the Ivy League schools are all-around excellent places to study, but I was wondering if anyone knows of specialized schools, or any high-caliber schools with exceptional linguistics programs.

WOW! This question could've been written by me!
I've been doing research on this very subject (I want to get a Master's degree in linguistics--although by the look of it I'll have to go for a doctorate since it seems most universities discourage mere Master's degrees. lol)

Anyway, so far I've been impressed by MIT's strenuous program, Stanford's linguistics projects, and the Applied Linguistics program at SDSU.

And I was VERY impressed with Eastern Michigan university. Look here: http://linguist.emich.edu/

MIT is over-priced, in my opinion, (which is evidently shared by at least one professor there: http://philip.greenspun.com/school/tuition-free-mit.html)

I'd be very interested in hearing what schools you find interesting.

Good luck!

I second the 'vote' for Middlebury. The school is extremely well regarded for the language program. If you have an interest in a specific language, it might help to determine additional schools known for that particular area.

If you go to getyourdegree.net they will let you know about campus and online universities in your area but not sure about the exceptional or high caliber of schools you may be looking for... but it's probably worth a shot.

One school that has always been famous for languages is Middlebury College in Vermont. It is a lovely school in a small town... a nice place to spend four years!

one in all my pals from community college is in the lingustics application at UCLA. He particularly likes it, so i think of UCLA is fairly sturdy for that substantial. of direction Berkeley is. i think of foreign places language is purely an analogous at fairly lots each and every of the sturdy UCs (UCLA, Berkeley, Irvine, Davis, u.s., u.s.) because of the fact its purely language and those colleges could uphold their sturdy popularity, so as that they could attempt to make all their departments particularly sturdy. And, regardless of your foreign places language you elect, you additionally can look on the learn in another country recommendations. it could particularly permit you notice yet another edge of that language and its lifestyle.
