I just answered a similar question elsewhere so I will reprint my answer for you:
I have been using Smart FTP for years now without a problem. It's free and works very well.
You can download it here:
http://www.smartftp.com/
To start, you will need your website's ftp address and password, both of which would have been supplied to you by your webhost. Your ftp address looks like this: ftp.yourdomainname.com. If you don't know them then just call or email your webhost.
Once you load Smart FTP, just type in your ftp address and password.
The next screen that opens will be split, on the left side will be your website files and on the right will be your computer desktop.
It just a matter of dragging whatever files you want to upload from your desktop across to your website. Whenever you do this it will automatically update the previous file.
Notes: Your website's home page is generally called index.html
You upload this file into the public_html folder at your webhost.
So for the very first time, load smart ftp and open your site. Then drag your index.html file over and place it on the public_html folder.
Alternatively you can open your public_html folder first by clicking on it, then drag your index.html file across and place in anywhere.

There is no difference. FTP is a standard file transfer method. The only difference is that you're doing one from a client tool or the command line, and the other from a browser. The browser still sends the same commands, and everything has to be set up the same way.

There are free ftp programs available at snapfiles.com.
I use Filezilla. To upload files to a site, you need to have the IP address, username and pw of the server where the site files are located. In the ftp program, look at the help files on how to set up your connection.

Total Commander ( http://www.ghisler.com/ ) is what I use to upload files to our servers.
You will need to find a hosting company that can host your files/website. I good start to find out more information in this area would be Web Hosting Talk ( http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ ). Some great resources there. Currently my favorite host is Dream Host ( http://www.dreamhost.com/ ) but most people will tell you (and I will too) that a great host will depend on your needs (is this a personal family website, blog, business site, portfolio, etc.). Also smaller hosts tend to not stay around as long. Research any host you go with at the above mentioned forums to see if there are any major problems with the company or its services.

I use FileZilla for Windows. It's free and reliable.

If you don't have a website, you can get a free one with advertisements at Yahoo! Geocities. You can't use a FTP client with the free service. Or you can upgrade and get an ad-free site or your own domain from Yahoo! Geocities for a monthly fee.
