I hope you mean x² - 24x + 144 = 36, otherwise left side isn't square.

(x - 12)² = 36
x - 12 = ±6
x = 12 + 6 = 18 or
x = 12 - 6 = 6
that's B.

x^2 - 24x + 44 = (x-22)(x-2). Not that it helps. The solutions should be 12 +/- sqrt(34) I think. (Just did it in my head.) Those are not solutions to this x^2 -24x +8 = 0 equation.

edit>> ah yes, Philo is right. Looks like you have an obvious typo.

set it equal to zero:
x^2-24x+8=0
then you try to factor; what adds to -24 and multiplies to 8
...
if you cant find anything, then you need to use the quadratic formula
-b +/- sqrt(b^2 -4ac) all over 2a
a=1
b= -24
c= 8
so -24^2 is 576 minus 4(1)(8) which gives you 544
sqrt of 544 simplifies to 4 root 34
-8 +/- 4root34 over 2a is -4+/- 2root34
so x= -4 plus 2root34 and -4 minus 2root34
so none of those answers work, either its a bad question or you wrote it wrong

Larvay had it right. That is the way to solve the quadratic equation. The solution is x=23.66 and 0.34. You can plug it in and verify.
x=(-(-24)+or-sqrt ((-24)^2-32))/2.
