I'd say yes. You could use a Skilter 400 filter, but I'd suggest a separate skimmer.

I would highly recommend a protein skimmer for a tank this size. You'll find that it's well worth the money to buy a high quality one, but if you can't afford the high end, even the cheap brands are better then nothing. You'll notice a greasy looking film at the top of your tank if you don't use one, and there is no good way to get rid of it.

If you can afford the higher end brands, I'd highly recommend the aquaC series (http://www.proteinskimmer.com). It's very easy to set up, easy to clean, and very effective. I've been using an AquaC for about a year now, after wasting hundreds of dollars on cheaper varietys. I bought one that has the drain piece on the collection container, and am filling a 2 liter soda bottle with pea-soup colored gunk about 1/month. It's beyond gross.

Not absolutely required, but strongly suggested!

If you know anyone else that has a marine tank with a skimmer, ask to see (or smell) the disgusting stuff inside the collection cup sometime. Then stop to think if you'd like to have that IN your water.

A good bit of the material that's removed is from the decomposing wastes that would otherwise contribute to the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in the tank.

In my adventure the Reef Octopus is thru far the wonderful product for the money in terms of fee and build high quality, and to the wonderful of my information performs the wonderful of those listed. stay faraway from crimson Sea skimmers as they have a tendency to be of a rather shoddy build high quality and don't carry out everywhere close to as nicely as their pricetag might justify, nor Coralife or cutting-edge u . s .. i've got heard solid issues approximately viaAqua, and a few approximately AquaMedic, however the two a sort of tend to be rather costly. If it became me i might truly decide for the RO unit, even with the undeniable fact that during the adventure that your money can stretch to it, a Deltec or a Tunze additionally are marvelous ideas.
