When I bought my Compaq 4 years ago it didn't come with an XP CD but you just turned it on and began installation. Its far too late now to get one but is that odd?

No actually its not that uncommon for a new computer to not have a stand alone operating system cd, which keeps the buyer from being able to install the operating system on a new computer due to the restore software that does come with your computer is system proprietary.

This is a standard oem install method, a hidden partition on the disk carries the whole setup. If your disk ever fails the manufacturer will normally supply a cd to create the same partition, often for the cost of the cd media.

That's typical for Compaq and HP. They stored the install files on a small partition on the hard drive. If the drive failed or a new drive was installed it was a real pain to get it working again.

If you intend to keep the computer,do yourself a favor and buy you an OEM copy of XP. Tigerdirect among others has it for $139.

Personally, i wouldn't trust a Compaq as a doorstop.

a few years back, the computer companies figured it was cheaper to put your recovery disc's on a separate partition of your hard drive. when you boot up, look for something like"system restore hit f11".
